Americans give more to charity, per capita and as a percentage of gross domestic product, than the citizens of other nations. But why?

It was intersting to read how countries with the most agressive tax systems do the least per capita and GDP to help the needy. Hopefully we'll all learn Government Redistibutions of wealth are and have always been least effective way of helping the truly needy.
