Neutralizing the opposition

The Foxified debate over whether the White House is being mean to a certain network is morphing into a broader argument about the politics of negativity.

The question, which is being pushed on the right, is whether the Obama team is using its muscle to demonize its opponents.

The president bears a special burden in this regard. He ran as a post-partisan guy who would reach out to the other side. (Of course, Bush also ran as a ... Full Story »

There are a few gems buried in this haystack, namely the quotes from David Corn and Thomas Frank. But much of it is unfocused and just gossip. Mr. Frank calls a piece by Glenn Back "almost entirely incorrect." That is the point. Not just that they are biased, but that they are lying to the public. Corn shows how they slant everything, even an appearance by a liberal. That's also the point. The frame matters. And Fox knows it. That's why they do it.

Kurtz is all over the map. I am not sure what the message is from his many tangents.

Fox and the JCC have been taken over as disinformation conduits. That transends partiality in coverage. Interviewing on Fox does not provide ... More »

This is an interesting piece that provides snippets on the Obama/Fox dispute from across the political spectrum. Nicely arranged and the piece itself takes no position.

Based on my readings, Kurtz seems to have overlooked other news outlets' defense for Fox News in this fight. Most obviously, at least two of Kurtz's colleagues have criticized the administration's "dumb war" with Fox (links). Kurtz's counterpart at the New York Times, David Carr, has called attention to it also. Guests and anchors on MSNBC and CNN and other media observers have made the tired comparison to the Nixon White House. So I think it's myopic to say "Other news organizations ... More »

Interesting observations about the Obama administration's recent attacks on Fox News. The author provides a thoughtful analysis on the issue of whether it's right for a government to marginalize political media outlets like Fox. Also includes a great roundup of opinions from across the spectrum on this topic.

There is an air of objectivity in this article, presenting both the current state of affairs and the background of previous Presidential concerns with various news organizations. He's making a point, using historical information, and I found that it was certainly worth considering.

No. Kurtz appears to be all over the place with his arguments. His writing should be clearer and he should focus on less arguments in order to better support them with quotes or examples from news clips. Although it's a good topic Kurtz's argument should be clearer.
