Gay leaders furious with Obama

Barack Obama’s choice of a prominent evangelical minister to deliver the invocation at his inauguration is a conciliatory gesture toward social conservatives who opposed him in November, but it is drawing fierce challenges from a gay rights movement that – in the wake of a gay marriage ban in California – is looking for a fight. The story I'd anticipated on Obama's selection of Rick Warren as his inaugural speaker. For a standard news report, it quotes extensively from LGBT advocates, and seeks the appropriate comment from Warren and his church.

I'm disappointed that the Politico allowed Warren's statement to BeliefNet -- that he compares "'redefinition of a marriage' to include gay marriage ... More »

The line that said Warren didn't comment for this story should have probably been higher up, before he was criticized a number of times in the story. There are also a lot of quotes saying Warren was an inappropriate choice, but very little from any source as to why Obama chose Warren.

This is an interesting and concerning story about Rick Warren being selected to the invocation. It is an interesting read.

So Rick Warren will do the prayer that is better than having him in Barack Obama's cabinet.

Trying to write about hot buttoned issues is like trying to put on two left shoes, you can get them on, but they will never fit good. A well written piece on a controversial issue, and I love reading about controversial issues.

I'm not sure how to come down on this issue. While I agree with the gay-rights activists, and do think Obama could have picked someone less ... More »

Gays are irrelevant. Relevant are the democratic left and evangelicals. The democratic left has no other place to go, so it is the evangelicals that count. Watch him keep don't ask don't tell next. The story does not make clear the plain old political calculation that trumps left ideology.

It is a succinct, balanced, and fact-based article that sticks to its purpose: describing the gay community's [actually its leaders'] frustration with what appears to be a decision that may not have been well considered by Obama and his people.

I am quite puzzled why Obama would choose this way to reach across the divide on full citizenship for lgbt people. Surely there must be clergy who, ... More »
