Mormon Church feels the heat over Proposition 8

Los Angeles Times - by Nicholas Riccardi - Nov. 17, 2008 (News Report)
The church, which has long sought to be seen as part of America's mainstream, joins with other religious organizations to back California's ban on gay marriage. But now it has become a political target.
In June, leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made a fateful decision. They called on California Mormons to donate their time and money to the campaign for Proposition 8, which would overturn a state Supreme Court ruling that permitted gay marriage.

That push helped the initiative win narrow passage on election day. And it has made the Mormon Church, which for years has striven to be seen as part of the American mainstream, a ... More »

Notes: This is not particularly quality journalism. It is written with a clear bias for the Mormon church and the "bigotry" their faith has suffered because the church openly supported California's Proposition 8. It's an amazingly original tact on this relevant topic. Note the false statement that is pulled out below and one of many links that refute the claim..

Notes: I agree that it cannot be just the church who got something voted in. Surely California Citizens were there to vote as well as the Mormons in CA on Nov. 4th? The gays should have put more money and effort into their cause if it meant that much to them.

That’s ironic, Shipps said, given that the Mormon Church has a more tolerant stance on homosexuality than some evangelical groups. The church has pointedly declined to state that homosexuality is a choice. And it has cautioned against programs that purport to “cure” same-sex attraction, even though Mormon theology holds that marriage is a divine relationship between men and women that continues into the afterlife.

Talk about ironic! The Mormons tolerant of homosexuality? This passage makes me question the entire article.

I have family members who are intelligent, productive members of society but shun me for being gay now that they are Mormons. The evangelical, fundamentalist christians that make up the majority of my family believe the Mormons are in a cult, but they all agree on one thing - being gay is the worst possible thing in the world. Hate, disguised as tough love, is the glue that holds the majority of my family together.
I think much of the bile is being hurled at the mormons because they make and easy target. They are suspect by many, distrusted and misunderstood. I feel their out of state fundraising for what is a California issue was out of line as was the Catholic church.
