Bryce takes one aspect of the market and focuses on that. His argument is interesting, but not slam dunk compelling. He does not mention that current ethanol schemes have large cost side effects, and does not mention that with production expenditures of energy, the carbon footprint of ethanol can be worse than petroleum. And, in the long run, any fuel can substitute for any other fuel such as diesel, if you pay for redesign and replacement of the engines.

From the beginnings of the oil industry, gasoline was always the short end of the barrel, the true value was in the heavier products, or the light products that could be used for consumer products. The report while spot on about the heavy oils doesn't look at light petro products that make up the expensive end of the barrel.

It does the service of bringing an obscure truth to light which has been ignored (for lack of interest, wishful thinking, and personal economic gain) and which is of crucial importance for the economic health of the nation. The author doesn't resort to hyperbole despite his obvious emotional commitment to the subject, but presents the facts clearly and succinctly.
