Interracial couple denied marriage license in La.

A white Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have.
Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.
"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black ... Full Story »

A bit of a thumbnail sketch about a still-pressing issue

Perhaps Judge Bardwell just might want to get a calendar...

Tangipahoa Parish President Gordon Burgess said Bardwell’s views were not consistent with his or those of the local government. But as an elected official, Bardwell ... More »

I left Louisiana in 1968, every time I return, I am reminded of one thing I was glad I left behind. This is not suprising in the least.

This would not be surprising if written in 1959 but is nearly inconceivable in 2009. Unreal.

I can't really "review" this little article in the usual sense. It makes me too angry. I am white and my wife is black, and I have a sudden urge to drive to Peckerwood Parish, LA (that *is* where this guy is Injustice of the Peace, right?) and kick some judicial ass. I found this article to be very informative and interesting. Mary Foster's writing is very concise and to the point, while giving enough information about the story to keep the readers hooked. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this story.

I can't believe that in the year 2009 a government official would refuse to marry a biracial couple. I think it's disgusting that, after a black man ... More »

This is mediocre journalism. It has all the foundations for being good journalism; however, the article falls short. There are many promsing aspects. First, the piece as an opportunity to give insight on a civil rights issue. Second, it has some great quotes about bigorty. Third, the story resignates with many people because our president is biracial. However, the author chooses to include all of the boring but important information. Sullivan writes about all the facts rather than ... More »
