There is no doubt that America can out innovate any country in the world IF she puts her mind to. And look at the resources she has to draw on. The Space program, Silicon valley, the Skunk Works and so forth. She does have some unbelievable failures though. Look at her reaction to Katrina and look at the way the major media kow tow to the Bush administration. The reputation of American journalism is at the same level as the reputation of Chinese milk products. What America needs now is a new New Deal. Unlike the previous one which established the infrastructure of America, this one must result in the Energy independence of America. Contemplate for a moment how much nastiness, suffering and death would be eliminated all over the world if America produced all her energy needs within her own borders. I doubt if either of the present candidates, though, has the vision and drive of Franklin D.
