This Is the Khalidi Obama Embraced

Many others have surmised that the Los Angeles Times is running interference for Barack Obama, declining not just to provide the tape of the Rashid Khalidi goodbye event which Obama attended in 2003, but a complete transcript. It is reasonable to ask what could have been so bad about the event. What could possibly have been so objectionable about the speeches or proceedings that might concern voters at this late date?

This opinion blog is more conspiracy theory speculation on the L.A. Times' refusal to realease a tape from a Khalidi event and on Obama's real views regarding the Israeli/Palestinian conflict in light of Khalidi's views. Nothing really new is presented here. Even the "sensational" quotes from a Times article and from later Khalidi speeches will strike many as fairly mainstream views often reported in the US, European and Israeli media. But then, the point here may be that departing from a singularly pro Israel stand should be unacceptable.

Calling for the destruction of Jews is bigoted antisemitism but criticizing a policy of the state of Israel is not. Criticizing the influence of the Israel lobby in the US is not. Advocating for a better life for Palestinians is not. Criticizing the position of Jewish zealots is not -- and is not anti-Israel either. I believe that Israel is entitled to exist peacefully without constant attack but that Palestinians are entitled to a better, less obstructed and more peaceful life as well. The world ought to get on with helping to find a practical, unideological solution to the issue. That said, the right of return is a very difficult subject. Granting the right of return could threaten the essential Jewish nature of Israel as a refuge of last resort for Jews, the historical persecution of whom continues in some areas even today (I've even observed pockets of nonphysical discrimination in the US).
