Reid, Baucus ready to split on public option as vote nears

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.), once in polite disagreement over the idea of a public option component in healthcare legislation, are approaching a breaking point over the issue.

Reid and Baucus have staked out opposing positions on the central question of a government role in health reform — Reid has consistently stood in favor, but Baucus has consistently said the idea doesn’t ... Full Story »

Interesting story that hits on the slippery deal making among Reid and the Senate Democrats, who are trying to merge three separate bills. The Hill worked from the outside in, comparing Reid, Baucus and Harkin's statements to newspapers, then went to aides on both sides of the aisle. Short but effective.

I reiterate: If you're going to write a news story about health care reform in Congress it should look something like this. Don't worry that it ... More »

A mostly sit on the couch and and watch the Sunday show article. I like the article, but there was nothing anyone else could not have written.

this focuses on one potential divide on the bill in the senate based upon a disagreement between senate maj. leader and finance comittee leader on the public option. there's not real news here but it seems fair.

most of what's happening with the bill has been covered thoroughly and to me it seems as if the media is simply searching for new light to reflect ... More »

The story informs us what is going to happen in the Senate regarding the Universal Healthcare Plan, and give us hints that there maybe some sorts of public option in the bill passed , at last. Good journalism, I must say.

Informative report on power plays within the Senate about the health care reform bill. This story provides good factual evidence with multiple sources, though many of these sources are other news providers or anonymous. Useful context about behind-the-scenes alliances between senators, which helps us understand how a final bill might come about.

An interesting article because, in the quotes it offers, the politics played are very visible, between public option supporters, Baucus, and Republicans.

Haven't see very much on the public option in other news sources lately so this is an important (and news breaking story). It gives details on the players (although the football analogy gets old, I guess it's that time of year) and addresses how the House and Senate bills may be consolidated. Most sources just give Baucus the lead role without any context.
