While Merrill Lynch is gone forever, that big bronze bull still flares its massive horns down at Bowling Green Park, a few blocks south of Wall St. The sculptor parked his four-ton creation right in front of the New York Stock Exchange immediately following the 1987 crash. He thought the symbol of a robust market might bring needed good luck, and to this day traders will sneak by and rub the behemoth’s testicles to aid their fortunes.

This isn't journalism but it is quality. Peter Laarman, a reverend and a scholar (sort of like an officer and a gentleman but less Richard Gere, more prophet Jeremiah), looks for the root cause of the economic crisis. It's not to be found solely in numbers and policies, but rather in the religious nature of the market...

Beats to death the unfactual and absurd theory that the US worships markets. If we did the libertarian party and candidates would be winning elections. The author is a graduate of Brown and Yale and community organizer.
