What Did Bush Tell Gonzales?

Sources say Alberto Gonzales now claims that President Bush personally directed him to John Ashcroft's hospital room in the infamous wiretap renewal incident

Although this president is famously known for rarely becoming immersed in the details--even on the issues he cares the most about--Gonzales has painted a picture of Bush as being very much involved when it came to his administration's surveillance program. Full Story »

Maybe it is just late, but I had trouble picking out the worthy new information provided in the article. There is a lot of repetition of the Ashcroft hospital visit, and some new details that are a little difficult to judge as to their importance.

This is an excellent article. Well written and thoroughly researched. President Bush is not presented in a positive light and it appears he engaged in felonious criminal activity with the help of his future AG. Bush's remark that he decides what the law is for the executive branch mirrors his rationale for signing statements.

This report cites unnamed sources as stating that Gonzales has told federal investigators that Bush put him up to trying to obtain Ashcroft's approval of the Bush surveillance program while Ashcroft lay ill and medicated in a hospital. The report then goes on to speculate as to Gonzales' motives in this admission and to rehash what is known about the disagreement between Bush and the Justice Department concerning the legality of that surveillance program. While I believe that the ... More »

Clear, extensive reporting on an incident which may stand out as one of the hallmarks of the Bush 43 administration. Outstanding amount of significant details: the narrative of the events surrounding Gonzales's and Card's visit to Ashcroft in the hospital creates a very clear picture. Fascinating discussion of the legal strategies being used by former attorney general Gonzales in defending himself during investigation into whether he lied to Congress under oath, and whether or not ... This is a well documented story about one issue. Unfortunately there are other examples of this administration. Perhaps the card house is falling. We are now seeing more stories about the positions and issues of the administration.

This is a DYNAMITE story. Given the magnitude of the current banking collapse and the clamor for accountability, this story should be banner headlines across the media spectrum. It is difficult to imagine that requisite levels of popular support to implement swift and sure accountability would fail with this evidence in hand. Well done.

All of these details have been available for a long time except the president's involvement. That was suggested but not strongly. Murray Waas seems to have secured his details. Why has nothing been done about these things? Since nothing has been done, the flag needs to fly or fly again, looking for justice and truth. Or not. The passion for prosecution that the Republicans have shown in the recent past seems to be missing from the Democratic forces.

It is too long. Could have made the point in half the number of words. Also does not have link to sources. The subject matter is good but I think the article can be improved.

Dan Richman, a former federal prosecutor in Manhattan and professor at Columbia Law School, told me that Gonzales appears to be attempting to walk the thin line of taking ... More »
