Campaign of lies disgraces McCain

McCain's straight talk has become a toxic mix of lies and double-speak. It is leaving a permanent stain on his reputation for integrity, and it is a short-term strategy that eventually will backfire with the very types of independent-thinking voters that were so attracted to him. Full Story »

This editorial chastises McCain for lies in his campaign ads and goes on to opine that he may be alienating the independent voters that he seeks. While the editorial position is admirable, I don't believe that they make their case as to the possible outcome. It appears to me that over the last eight years (and to a lesser extent before) we have seen that lies work. Supporters love them and in spite of debunking by the responsible press, the public at large seems to be swayed by them.

The St. Petersburg Times' editorial is righteously, and rightly chastising the candidate who used to pride himself as a straight-talker and who promised to take the high road (McCain) is now wallowing in the mud in his altest attack ads, most notably the "sex-ed" and the "lipstick on a pig" slanders. This opinion piece has minimal journalistic merit. It is unbalanced. The Democrats have issued far more ads with lies about McCain and Palin. When you count the media, who are largely aligned with the Democratic party, the lies are probably 90% by the Democrats.
