McCain Barbs Stirring Outcry as Distortions

"I think the McCain folks realize if they can get this thing down in the mud, drag Obama into the mud, that's where they have the best advantage to win," said Matthew Dowd, who worked with many top McCain campaign advisers when he was President Bush's chief strategist in the 2004 campaign, but who has since had a falling out with the White House. "If they stay up at 10,000 feet, they don't." Full Story »

This report pulls together information on several recent false McCain campaign claims that have been reported on and evaluated separately in other reports and have been widely condemned. It acknowledges and identifies past false claims put forth by Obama's campaign. It contains quotes critical of McCain's recent distortions from Democrats, Republicans and independents. But in the end, it admits that telling lies and standing by them seem to have been effective in boosting McCain's ... More »

The article takes a look at the tenor of the advertising in the recent weeks of the presidential campaign and assesses accuracy, exaggeration, and quality. While both candidates run ads that somewhat misrepresent and distort, John McCain's are (to use David Brooks's words) more egregious. In fact, some of the sources quoted used the word "Lies." Will it work or will it backfire?

Some real journalism! It's time the media put away their pom poms and cheerleading sweaters and start covering this election objectively. Maybe rerouting the Straight Talk Express into the mud actually wins elections. Then again, maybe not. Recalling the 1968 Humphrey-Nixon election: Nixon had an early wide lead, but as the election approached, his big lead evaporated as voters realized who the real Nixon was. Had the election been two weeks later, Humphrey would have won. 2008 could ... More »

Excellent and very fair & balanced analysis by the NY Times staff of how McCain is now driving his famed Straight-Talk Express through the muddiest of roads. It even quotes Republican sources in expressing dismay at how loosely McCain is playing with the truth. Here's an example of such a voice: "Mr. Sipple, the Republican strategist, voiced concern that Mr. McCain’s approach could backfire. 'Any campaign that is taking liberty with the truth and does it in a serial manner will ... More »

Further media documentation that the "straight talk express" is very willing "to go negative" and then spin it as if it isn't really negative, it's the Obama campaign that is negative--in fact it is all their fault ( “The tone of this ... whole campaign would have been very different if Senator Obama had accepted my request for us to appear in town hall meetings all over America, the same way Jack Kennedy and Barry Goldwater had agreed to do so,” McCain said." see quote ... I guess Obama sticks strictly to the truth. Obama's tax program is the Robin Hood class warfare plan. Won't work. People who are slightly clued in don't believe it for a second and McCain is right to attack it.

t’s time that the media stop defending this man and wake up and see the warning signs before it’s too late. Do we want a president who let’s others unknown to us including the lobbyists who work for him make decisions for him and for us as a nation? Who are we electing to be our president; John McCain or Carl Rove?

This opinion piece has minimal journalistic merit. The authors repeat the standard talking points of the Obama campaign and neglect to point out the steady stream of vicious attacks by Obama and his media outlets on McCain and Palin. Did they not bother to read the Newsweek hit-piece cover story on Palin, or the US Weekly and National Enquirer cover stories? Criticism of Obama has been moderate by comparison. The piece suggests once again that Obama is incapable of handling even mild criticism.
