Sarah Palin: Media Victim or Campaign Weapon?

The Republican National Convention became the coming out party for Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska as John McCain's vice presidential nominee. A storm of worldwide negative media coverage scrutinizing every controversial detail of her life at times felt like a soap opera. Now, as the media are portrayed as the bad guys, many speculate it was all a part of McCain's grand campaign strategy. SOURCES: Al Jazeera, Qatar; Press TV, Iran; Tele 13, Chile; TV5, ... It presents a lot of speculation--well-informed speculation, I'll grant you. But, unless you could get a campaign operative to tell the truth about their strategy, you'll never know.

Interesting video compilation showing how different world broadcasters are covering Sarah Palin. While some broadcasters thought that the real story was McCain's judgment in picking that controversial candidate, the McCain campaign and partisan supporters are cited as claiming that the liberal media is to blame for unfair coverage. This analysis suggests that was part of McCain's strategy from the start, but doesn't develop this argument fully in this segment. Still, this is a ... More »

Interesting, but not too meaty. It shows a small sample of world TV response, and finds them covering the soap opera drama. It implies the question of whether the White House will become a bad soap opera, or might have some semblance of a respectable center of world leadership. They seem to sense they cannot ignore this candidacy because of their past disbelief that the United States could actually elect G.W.Bush.

An informative story—provided one believes McCain actually selected his VP nominee. But if one believes it was the ultra conservative big money boys who really chose Palin, then the strategy has more to do with cementing support of the right-wing base, picking up stray disenchanted Hillary supporters, and doing what Democrats failed to do—putting a woman on the ticket. And along the way, hoping non convervative voters buy their Rovian concoctions debunking all those terrible ... More »

An interesting story about McCain's selection of a vice president candidate and the campaigns plans. Since most of the media in the USA are unwilling to do good journalism, it is important to find out other sources of journalism.

Interesting to see news clips from around the world on the reporting of Palin's nomination. Some speculation if the selection of an unknown candidate with issues was a tactical ploy by McCain to unify the party by attacking the media or if it was a selection that showed his lack of judgment. With the revelation today that McCain was standing in front of a picture of Walter Reed Middle School located in Hollywood instead of Walter Reed Hospital during his acceptance speech as ... More »

They make the McCain campaign seem incredibly devious and smart. If only it were so. The mainstream media support Democrats. That's well-known and quite obvious. So why wouldn't the Republicans attack them? The McCain campaign by keeping Palin quiet while the media attacked for several days gave the media enough rope to hang themselves. But I doubt it was a plot. They were probably busy preparing her for the convention. Obviously the clip repeated lies without correction, such as the ... More »

There is no journalistic content to evaluate. The author seems to think that Gov Palin was selected by accident, when in fact Sen McCain did his selection much more carefully than the botched job done by Sen Obama. Gov Palin is a mainstream politician who works well with Democrats and has skewered the right-wing Republicans in her state. She was well known among Republicans who made her a favorite for the VP position for months, and she was already on McCain's list in February. Only ... More »

It is an interesting story for someone who has not been keeping up with the news of the convention.

Maybe... It seems like the hype is continued in covering Ms. Palin at all. The real reason anyone does anything is always suspect until we can begin to read minds. So maybe not.

Certainly anything the McCain campaign were to say about any of its motives is suspect. It has flipped positions numerous times on issues.
