McCain Gambles that Palin is More than a Dan Quayle

Team Obama wasted no time in jumping all over Alaska governor Sarah Palin; as they brusquely put it she has zero experience in statecraft. The obvious point is that this automatically flushes down the drain Republican rival John McCain's prime hit point against Democratic nominee Barack Obama and that's that he's simply too much of a greenhorn on foreign policy and national security to trust White House command too. The Silly Season is getting interesting. Palin is rabidly anti abortion—opposing it for even rape and incest; she is deep in the pockets of the Sisters of Oil; her political experience is nothing more than newly elected governor and small town mayor; her foreign policy experience is zero—the same thing Republicans criticize Obama for; she supports the teaching of Creationism; she has the special interests view that global warming isn’t human caused; is embroiled in home-state ... Very good analysis of why Palin's choice does make some sense in spite of all the talk about her mayoralty of a town of 6,500 (read: unfit to be VP). Some of the reasoning, particul;arly towards the end, is rather compelling. What it does not do is make the argument that McCain's grab for disaffected Clinton die-hards is an insult to the intelligence of women who followed that historic candidate for her feminist views, and Palin is so far to the right that to hope any transfer of ... The opinion points out that the fresh face disconnected from everthing old in Washington but not that she is mostly disconnected from everything. The strategic McCain/neocon motive guessed at is interesting and plausible.

America doesn't need an administration with all the foreign affairs bells and whistles. America needs an administration that will sort out the problems at home and Palin has shown herself both inclined in this direction and gutsy enough to do something about it. Get it right within America and most of the overseas problems will evaporate. (energy independence for instance) What an amazingly good choice McCain has made. One hopes, if elected, McCain will give Palin real responsibility ... More »

This opinion piece has journalistic merit. The author makes an objective case for Palin, though incomplete. He notes that Palin has opposed Republican leaders, but could have also pointed out her work with major Democratic leaders on key issues, such as the oil company taxes. But overall the author gives a balanced viewpoint on her qualifications and why she clearly helps the ticket.

PALIN GETS IT! Missing in the article is that Palin understands global oil economics BETTER than Obama/Biden, and perhaps better than McCain. A strong advocate on increasing oil supplies, she will help reduce Russian, Iranian, Saudi, and Venezuelan influence. With the $30 billion pipeline she pushed through the oil companies, she will help reduce US dependence on foreign supplies. Her defiance of corruption of all parties is exactly what everyone has been praying for. SHE GETS IT! I ... More »
