McCain Chooses Palin as Running Mate

In a surprise move, Senator John McCain announced here Friday that he had chosen Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate, shaking up the political world at a time when his campaign has been trying to attract women, especially disaffected supporters of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"I'm very happy today to spend my birthday with you, and to make a historic announcement in Dayton," said Mr. McCain, who turned 72 on Friday, explaining that ... Full Story »

Good job getting viewpoints, giving a balanced overview of the new candidate. That said, the biography of Sarah Palin fails to cover either her reputation as an ethics advocate, or the ironic ethics investigation of which she currently is the subject.

There is no mention of the fact that Sarah is a Libertarian Republican in the Reagan/Goldwater mold who does not let her religious beliefs influence her governing style. It does note that her selection has energized the Republican base and attracted disaffected Hillary supporters. It also fails to deal with the fact that she is a corruption fighter against her own party and an energy expert. No mention was made of her negotiations with Canada over a natural gas pipeline or with Russia over fishing rights. The points the article hits are factually correct but what makes it poor are all the things it left out. It also fails to point out that the Vice President does not have any Constitutional duties except presiding over the ... More »

Article misses important information on her background including a new investigation into her decision to fire an employee. Story http://www.adn.com/monegan/story/478090.html that discusses why she is being investigated. No mention in this story of the other more qualified Republican women including Kay Bailey Hutchison and Carly Fiorina who have more experience and had been campaigning for McCain. This is an unusual selection that deserves a thorough investigation into the reasoning for the selection.

Adequate introductory coverage of the announcement. No consideration of whether there was a side ploy of choosing a candidate second lady to take attention away from the huge money trove of the candidate first lady. The article notes that the final VP evaluation meeting was held in the digs of the Hensley corporate aristocracy.

This report starts out with an inaccurate statement: Gov Palin had strong support among Republicans, being tied with Romney in the VP polls, and so it did not astonish Republicans. It did surprise the Obama handlers, who were caught unprepared. The authors also apparently consider Canada a part of the U.S., since they make the ridiculous claim that Gov. Palin "appears to have traveled very little outside the United States."

Neglects to point out that she has more significant executive experience than Obama. Actually sexism to depict her as inexperienced.

They weren't very good about covering Palin's position about many issues. No mention about her petitioning to remove Polar Bears from the endangered species, her ties to the oil industry, approval of the bridge to nowhere (which she only recently opposed), her labeling Clinton a whiner this March, and the investigation to get her ex-brother-in-law and his boss fired. No mention that her husband is employed by BP. BP is the oil company involved in building the oil pipeline that she supports. She is for drilling in the Alaska Wild Life Refuge. Once again, the news media is always enamored with the wealthy, the pretty or whatever the corporations deem important to present to us the dumb public. Why don't they mention about McCain's ... My only contention, with what is otherwise a fair and balanced article, representing many of the differing view points - is the assertion that being a woman more than compensates for lack of experience. There is no evidence presented, to back this view and with such a controversial claim ( which I disagree with by the way) the subject cannot afford to be brushed aside by a mere ( Republican ) opinion!

There was nothing mentioned about the scandal involving her firing the Comissioner for not firing her brother-in-law, who is divorcing her sister. Seems it would be relevant to include pending abuse of power charges against her.
