His mistake is the same one that the last two Democratic candidates for President--Gore and Kerry--made. The assumption (shared by too many campaign consultants) that the way to woo those in the center is to move towards the center. An interesting point, well argued and reasoned, from a seasoned political watcher and former editor in chief of The Nation. I hear similar arguments in Democratic circles fairly regularly.
