The Big Tent in Denver

What the Democratic Convention Could Learn

[Disclosure: The is a post from the blog of a NewsTrust staff member.] It seems some of the more serious conversation on the future of the Democratic party in Denver this week--at least the progressive wing--might be taking place, not at the Convention or its associated events, but over at the Big Tent, a "new media center created by local organizations, national blogs, Digg, Google and YouTube." This eye-opening post contains detailed, well-sourced snapshots of what is going on at The Big Tent, the progressive un-convention happening in Denver on the environs of the DNC. TV and most mainstream media highlight the big-name speakers at the convention, and this post has further confirmed what many suspect: that voices within the Democratic party are not being heard by most of the U.S. and the world, not because they are not speaking, but because the MSM is not covering them. This blogger makes this case by including quotations and viewpoints from comedian/journalist Jon Stewart, CQ blogger Craig Crawford, and from a regular voter/private citizen (among others); by providing a wealth of links to other Web sites; and then NOT drawing all conclusions for the reader. When I read a post like this, I think back to political media coverage for the 2000 and 2004 elections and contrast it to 2008's. If it weren't for bloggers and Internet technology, we would be getting so much less coverage, and we would have no voice for making media coverage more widespread and accountable. I have learned a ton of new information and been exposed to many viewpoints from just this post. Regarding fairness, I think the post is fair as it can be; it does not hide its far-left leaning, and it presents its facts and opinions in a straight-forward way and without bashing opposing sides.
