Michael Moore Dares to Ask: What's So Heroic About Being Shot Down While Bombing Innocent Civilians? - War on Iraq

Like Iraq, Vietnam was not a noble cause. It's time we stopped letting politicians and the press perpetuate the McCain War Hero myth. Full Story »

The post betrays some ignorance of the bombing of North Vietnam--for instance that many targets could be considered dual purpose--like roads, etc. and that kind of thing exists within populated areas, also "dumb bombs" didn't always end up where intended. Other then that rather nit picky point it is a good informative piece. Here is an article from the period: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,843145-1,00.html Here is another on Rolling Thunder: ... More »

The article runs counter to the corporate pro-war press deification of POWs, implying they should never be criticized or challenged as humans functioning in some other role. The history of the Vietnam war, and McCain's role flying a bomber shows he followed orders, but wanted to bomb more civilians. For the current generation of voters who do not have a vivid historical memory of the VietNam war, the history here provides a quick refresher. Sir, No Sir and Winter Soldier provide some ... More »

This piece rips to shreds John McCain's contention that his service in Vietnam somehow qualifies him to be commander-in-chief. The Vietnam War was one of the most spectacular acts of mass stupidity seen in the past 50 years. Mass stupidity by the ruling elite of this country, that is. Millions died, needlessly, because American leaders frightened themselves into believing that the reunification of Vietnam under a communist regime somehow would threaten US national security. The ... More »

Should we stop fighting the Vietnam war? Yes, when the liberals apologize for the millions killed in Cambodia as a direct consequence of withdrawing aid from Vietnam. The politics of the war have nothing to do with McCain's experience as a prisioner. I don't think he ever claimed to be a hero.

Michael Moore asks the tough questions in his book and this article analyzes that quite fairly.

It takes a lot of guts to get in a light fighter/bomber plane on an aircraft carrier and take off to drop bombs on targets. First though, let's stop referring to McCain as a fighter pilot. Fighter pilots are real heroes. McCain was brave but not a hero. Dropping napalm and HE on populated areas, is not heroic. It's more like mass murder. Most of his missions were over Hanoi or many were. McCain himself admitted to Mike Wallace and others he was ashamed of killing innocent Vietnamese ... More »

This opinion piece has minimal journalistic value. It involved next to no actual journalistic effort, as it mainly quotes from a book. There is no effort to critique anything quoted from the book.
