Michelle Obama's Empty Seats

One thing that we Americans have to do is quit saying that we are in Iraq to defend America. It has nothing to do with patriotism, and it is not unpatriotic to state the obvious truth. A true patriot loves his country enough to say when his country is wrong. Full Story »

This is an opinion piece, but its tone undercuts its credibility and it meanders somewhat. My favorite part is the detailed excerpt from and delineation of the similarities to Orwell, which I think is quite well done, and for me is the core of the piece. Roland, we've repeatedly asked you to review based on the merits of the piece, not on what you perceive as a conflict of interest. While the author's self-rating might have been high (4.9), he did disclose as was required. As he was ... More »

It seems to me to be quite a stretch to construe Michelle Obama’s remarks honoring the service men and women in our military as somehow supporting Bush’s war in Iraq. If that’s the only way the author can find a way to criticize her perhaps he could find a better issue to write about.

The article presents a lot of valid points about the military and the invasion and occupation of Iraq. However, the author mis-frames it as Michelle praising the war, and as the soldiers willfully volunteering to join in the atrocities. Many of the soldiers do volunteer out of patriotism and good intentions, and then are caught up in the military brainwashing and the psychology of war. The personal devastation many experience after the brainwashing wears off can be witnessed in the ... More »

The author quite rightly invokes George Orwell's warnings about state deception of the people through calculated abuse of the language. I agree with the author that the invasion of Iraq had little or nothing to do with protecting national security, and that the continued squandering of hundreds of billions of dollars of US taxpayer funds, is not for the purpose of protecting America. These are but cover stories, intended to deceive.

Conflict of interest. The author of this piece has provided a rating of 5. This is a serious compromise of the integrity of NewsTrust. It is totally irrational to allow the author of a piece to provide a rating. It is an obvious bias in the system and makes NewsTrust look foolish to the outside world. Thus a rating of 1 until the author's rating is removed.

Yes, because it moves away from trivia and into larger issues, and points out how they relate to every voter.
