Windmills split town and families

"Listen," John Yancey says, leaning against his truck in a field outside his home.

The rhythmic whoosh, whoosh, whoosh of wind turbines echoes through the air. Sleek and white, their long propeller blades rotate in formation, like some otherworldly dance of spindly-armed aliens swaying across the land.

Yancey stares at them, his face contorted in anger and pain. Full Story »

Entertaining article. Highlights some of the personal and political issues regarding wind power. Misses one key point that wind power can never be successful without subsidies, as it needs 80-90% "backup reserves", and will never be a major factor in the power grid. With all the anecdotes, could use some about loss of sleep, low frequency noise problems, etc. But fun to read.

This article reminds me of a story that I heard about when the first steam locomotive went through a town. Everyone was happy about the civic progress it brought but, were upset with the noise. This article is more involved than one knows. However, it is only the view of a few. Wait till they start taking oil out of coal shale. That is a business that will cost to get started but, will reap fantastic financial rewards for many.
