Know-Nothing Politics

know-nothingism -- the insistence that there are simple, brute-force, instant-gratification answers to every problem, and that there's something effeminate and weak about anyone who suggests otherwise -- has become the core of Republican policy and political strategy. The party's de facto slogan has become: "Real men don't think things through." Full Story »

As an op-ed this piece is average journalism. It focuses on one current issue. Since the piece is a one sided attack against a political "tactic", fairness and balance are not objectives, therefore not included. In my opinion, Mr. Kruger tap-dances (as most journalists do) around the central issue,..the constituancy of the base that (for many reasons)readily accepts statements as facts BECAUSE they came from THEIR party politicians therefore TRUE and requiring no fact-checking. Mr. ... More »

Interesting thoughts and observations about how being a party of stupid is popular but what Krugman doesn’t come out and say is they have also become a party of bullies. He states that their new slogan has become: “Real men don’t think things through” but what about the media not doing their job and pointing this out with the same level of coverage that the media gives to the bullies who claim those who oppose their views are effeminate? They may be a party of stupid but they are ... More »

The Republican’s "stupid" strategy is based on the adage: "no one ever went broke underestimating the American people." It’s been outrageously successful keeping special-interest lackeys in power for eight years. And given Mccain's metamorphosis, it has a chance at another four years. The current drilling debacle—including the pitiable performance by Congressional Republicans meeting in the dark (how appropriate)—masks a major land grab while the Sisters of Oil still have lackeys ... Krugman at his biting best. And, unfortunately, he's probably right. In truth, the fact that gasoline prices are so high that they've forced demand down--and that fewer Americans have jobs to drive to--have probably done more than a handful of Republican lawmakers refusing to go home and face their constituents to lower the price of gas. But the other is a better story. And simpler. And Krugman is right that both work.

As an Opinion piece this is a valid piece. The reporter verifies that it is his opinion of politics as it is currently being practiced by the Republican Party. He validates the opinion with specific examples of the practices of the Republican Party with regard to various issues. He makes clear in the first line that he regards the practice of a know nothing voter base as a danger to the republic as we want it to be.
