Why Obama Could be in Trouble

When American news consumers aren't hearing misinformation, they're almost surely hearing trivia. The TV news shows couldn't resist endlessly repeating McCain's attack ad that compared Obama and his enthusiastic reception in Berlin to misbehaving celebrities Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. I agree with the author's assessment that a good portion of the American news media have marched in lock-step in election coverage, and I find his point somewhat well supported. But there are few things more aggravating than the pervasive and disturbingly ignorant discussion of The Media as if it were a single, centralized force or organization. Such a view, which this author aggressively promotes, wrongfully groups all or most mainstream media under one roof; it fails to recognize ... More »

Parry makes the argument that superficial journalism favoring one candidate over another could affect election outcome. Sounds obvious, but his examples from the recent campaign coverage give emphasis to the point. Given the mission of Newstrust, this is a topic of concern to all of us and raises the question of how misleading, glib MSM coverage can be counteracted or held to a higher standard.

This is an extremely well-written, thoughtful opinion piece from the left. Parry supports his contention with numerous detailed examples, and his analysis of the possible impact is thorough and compelling. Holding the news media accountable is exactly the purpose for which NewsTrust was created. This is an excellent submission.

While the examples Parry cites are dead-on accurate, I disagree with his conclusions. As much as the right wing loves to whine about the liberal press, it is absolutely, flat-out not true. While many journalists are more liberal, the giant corporations they work for are not. They and their editors know that. If they want to keep their jobs, they do as they're told. And they're told to echo the meme that's been assigned to them, and focus on the "cute" trivia because the audience it ... More »

Calling main journalism unfair is truthful. Most if not all are more concerned about the number of people that listen or read than trying to produce good journralism. That is why I take time to rate journalism. Some one must do something to make a change.

Excellent. It represents what we want & need in good journalism. We no longer have intelligent, fair reporting or even any adherence to the values of what journalism should be. Report the news, no lies, no distortions. Impossible now that the corporations control the media. A good example was Bob Schieffer of Face the Nation that I praised as a good journalist. I was greatly dismayed to see how he attacked Gen. Wesley Clark's statement that a war hero is not a qualification for a ... More »

The issue of media bias from the MSM has been a major concern since the Reagan years. The MSM has relied on the integrity of Cronkite, Brinkley, and Chancellor as a reference for the newspeople of today; unfortunately, the past several administrations have proven that supposition to be a fallacy. Couric? Gibson? Lightweights. Throw in the neocon propaganda outfit (Fox) to incessantly run misleading party statements masquerading as news, and McCain has his own press corps, courtesy of ...
