What does the solution look like?

I've heard it said that, if all you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Surgeons are notorious for recommending surgery for just about any ailment. There are probably more examples of this. But the idea is that every person looks for a solution within the realm of our own experience.

In an editorial, I ask whether the author has presented his or her view on an important topic in a way that raises interesting points and without undue distortion to prove the point and in an engaging style. As such, this qualifies as a good piece of opinion journalism. I like the set up in this piece, by one of the NewsTrust hosts, as well as the message and the conclusion. This quick read makes important points in a few sentences. As someone who has argued for thirty years and more, that the idiotic Vietnam War could have been "won" (if only a few hundred more billions of dollars had been poured into the rathole, a few million more people killed, etc.), John McCain quite obviously is a dangerous man to put in charge of deciding matters of war and peace. This is a well written opinion piece that relates each presidential candidate's approach to international relations to the hammer and nail story. The analogy seems well suited to McCain's support for war but seems to me to be a stretch for Obama. The alternative to war isn't so much writing new laws as it is diplomacy and a progressive and enlightened foreign policy.
