Comcastic? Fans smell a political rat in moving MSNBC

Hours before a televised presidential debate last December in Portland, Ore., Comcast moved the liberal-leaning MSNBC from basic cable to digital premium. Viewer fury was immediate. Comcast was inundated with complaints from thousands of cable subscribers who would not have been able to switch to the higher-priced package to see the debate on time even if they had wanted to. The editorialist neither gives us Comcast's side of the story nor explains why it wasn't included. The result is a low-value commentary telling us that liberals are unhappy over MSNBC's being moved with nothing but speculation as to why that happened.

This is a good article but I am choosing to write about the use of conservatives and liberal labels. I know that conservative used to define peoples views is a mis-use of the term. Now it seems that all who do not agree with conservatives are liberal. I suggest a change of terms. This story is an example of what happens when there is only one company that provides televison.

The story presents big right wing corporate media moguls appearing to try to reduce public access to MSNBC because it allows news and commentaries that perform the press function of public oversight of our elected officials. The information that the tactic is being used around the country tends to support the conspiracy allegation.

It’s nostalgic hearing that old term, ‘liberal bashing’, in this era when liberal has been elevated to a synonym for traitor. Of the four channels moved to digital, three are owned by GE. TruTV’s owner is Time Warner. I’m surprised Keith Olbermann has been allowed to continue his nightly Bush bashing. Evidently, ratings trump politics. Or is this a case of if you can’t beat him, move him?

First my review: I feel it is typical journalism, lacking some objectivity and using inflamatory inuendo such as "liberal-bashing" and "caters to" to establish the tone of the article. On the plus side, it is accurately describing the reaction of viewership in two cities in which "selective" channel switching has occurred. Balance-wise it gives (some) viewer reactions while balancing that it could be merely a "business" decision. On the negative side, it freely tosses around the ... More »
