McCain's drilling won't dent gas prices

McCain uses today's high gas prices as the foundation for his pitch to lift the federal ban on offshore drilling. But while there may be many strong arguments for offshore drilling, oil experts and economists say relieving today's fuel prices isn't one of them. Full Story »

This is the best brief analysis I've seen that exposes the fallacy of linking offshore drilling to reduced prices at the pump. My only quibble with it is that the writer seems to have accepted without challenge the claim that more drilling would make us more secure. It's going to take a comprehensive policy that addresses the world energy market to improve national security.

the article includes some real information from those who should know something about it, and important to what impact new drilling in the u.s. would have on the price of oil, and concludes that is not much. some greater comparing or contrasting of expert sources and discussion of other factors than price per barrel/tank such as how much it would undercut alternative energiy start-up would have made this better.

Factually debunks the myth that drilling offshore will reduce oil prices. Does not discuss what economist and oil experts indicate is the number one cause of rising cost of gas - energy speculation. Interesting with the rising cost of gas, there seems to be less talk on global warming and how offshore oil drilling will not help solve the need to reduce our dependency on oil.

An intelligent, well written article that clears up McCain's obfuscation about off-shore and ANWR drilling as well as summer tax relief. For consumers it's much ado about nothing. For Sister of Oil, it's yet another boondoggle.

McCain has made a smart political move and put Obama on the defensive. Can Obama flip flop too and support drilling? This author misses the point and wastes our time by telling us what we already know - it takes years to explore and develop oil resources.

This opinion piece has modest journalistic merit. The author seeks out those whose views oppose those of Sen McCain, with only one paragraph at the end "In fairness …" devoted to supporting McCain. The author ignores the fact that much of the price rise on oil is due to speculation, and that a commitment to moving forward on developing new oil resources in North America will decrease the interest of speculators.
