Israel imposes a 10-year ban on American critic of Israeli policies

On Friday, Israeli security forces, Shin Bet, detained Norman Finkelstein when he tried to enter Israel, kept him in an airport holding cell for 24 hours, ordered him deported from the country, and then imposed a 10-year ban on his entry. Both America (under the current regime) and Israel like to think of themselves as open societies. All it takes is a bit fear, real or concocted, to strip away that facade.

Greenwald takes the Finkelstein news, and connects it with analogous restrictions by the United States, as well as highlighting the partisan hypocrisy of the matter. It's not very balanced, but otherwise good news analysis.

Salon's constitutional lawyer turned commentator discusses the 10 year exclusion from Israel of American Norman Finkelstein. The banned political scientist was detained then deported by Israeli security forces. what seems important here is that governments even those which are 'democractic' are punitive when they are being criticized for doing embarrassing things. this points out the critical importance of citizens demanding to maintain all the civil rights they know they should have in a 'free society' as it is all too easy for those to be eroded by universities, corporations and governments. i'd like to have read here quotes, events, summaries of what the mentioned critics have actually ... This blog post, though biased, provides a factual and well sourced discussion of Israeli and US actions to deny entry to individuals solely because their views are opposed by the current governments. It does so without the vitriol often present in Greenwald's writing.

Censurship and the dislike of liberal views and thought is a very frightening but real occurrence. I do not, however, know hoe to answer it in this repressive climate. Unfortunately the 'public' seems okay with it.
