The McCain Doctrines

Whatever their disagreements on policy, United States senators, even in today's hyperpolitical climate, are reluctant to impugn one another's motives or integrity.

There is a feeling among some of McCain's fellow veterans [in the Senate] that his break with them on Iraq can be traced, at least partly, to his markedly different experience in Vietnam.... McCain did not share the disillusioning and morally jarring experiences... that some wars simply can't be won on the battlefield, no matter how long you fight them, no matter how many soldiers you send there to die. The journalism is embellished with comments that suggest support for military solutions as a primary determinant of qualification for president. Several comments garatuitiously dismissive of Democratic party views are included. There is implied subscription to the myth that Viet Nam could have resulted in "victory" for the United States with different tactics, despite the facts to the contrary, and the implicit immorality of that war. The article implies that the purpose of a war is ... More »

This eight-page tome provides insight about McCain, much of it gained from an interview from McCain himself. Even in face of his flip-flopping on issues to gain ultra convervative support, there is an honest side to the man. What is bizarre about his campaign is his single-minded focus on victory in Iraq, and his desire to make tax giveaways to the rich permanent--even though Reagan and both Bushs proved trickle-down economics is fraud. Every other Republican candidate is getting the ... More »

This is a balanced article based on research and an interview with McCain. While the author pretty clearly has a view that the war in Iraq will not become popular or "won", he deals with McCain's view in a fair and respectuful manner, never questioning his sincerity or motives.

Using a host of external sources and several interviews, this lengthy article offers a more comprehensive point of view on a political candidate that we are usually given. McCain comes away as a more complex man than most media portraits. And it's hard to know whether the author's judgments about McCain's motivation are accurate or not. I can say they're not really complete as the writer hints at possible interpretations for McCain's stances, without really coming down on one side or ... More »

This analysis finally asks the questions I've been asking: How someone who was a POW and thus experienced the worst consequences of war firsthand could support another endless conflict in Iraq. I don't agree with McCain's take on things, but now I understand a little better how he justifies them to himself.

Excellent NYT Sunday Magazine story describing, basically, an interview between the author and Senator McCain regarding the evolution of McCain's views on the War in Iraq and the differing views of his fellow Congressional Vietnam veterans. The headline, written in the plural ("Doctrines"), perhaps means to convey those evolutionary changes, but the article still disappoints in that it is so tightely restricted to discussions regarding the comparisons of the Vietnam and Iraq wars. ... This opinion piece has minimal journalistic value. John McCain was "sealed away"? was not "in country"? In fact the war in Vietnam went better and better after 1967, when he was captured, and would have kept the South Vietnamese free if it had not been for biased press reports on the Tet campaign, which was a disaster for the N. Vietnamese and their Viet Cong puppets, as historians today agree. One of the worst attack ads against McCain yet.
