Mr. McCain goes to Inez (KY) and tells us what women need

April 23, the press covered Senator John McCain's stop in Inez, KY on his "It's Time for Action" campaign tour, seeking to emphasize his attention to powerless in our country. As he campaigned in rural eastern Kentucky, where poverty is worse among women than men, McCain suggested what women need is education and training while talking about Ms. Ledbetter's case and the law before Congress to address a Supreme Court decision which reversed an award in her ... By weaving in many other news reports, plus some statistics, Wellington manages to show the difference between what 5 Supreme Court justices, the Bush administration, and Senator McCain say--and reality.

This well written blog entry hits close to home making an objective, impartial “review” impossible! As a Kentuckian I’m infuriated by McCain’s hypocritical use of Appalachian Kentucky to spotlight economic injustice that he has no intention of addressing. As a progressive I’m offended by his statements saying women need more education and training as if ignorance or incompetence is the cause of systemic discrimination. That the husband and wife team of Mitch McConnell and ... More »

i like the over-all style of this piece, with the comments between relevant quotes from named sources, and with something of a historical perspective. sen. mccain appears to be either out-of-touch with the reality 'on the ground' as he might say it, or pandering to his conservative fellows in not voting in ledbetter and his comments regarding how to 'help' women. additionally, (not mentioned here) regarding education and training, that is the overall republican catch-all answer for ... MCCain seems harmless to some people, less threatening that the Democratic alternatives. Women voters will, I hope, take note of what he really thinks about the need for economic empowerment of women.

Great article. The author of this post gave the reader a lot of information on the background of the issue on wages among the sexes. I enjoyed reading the history of several important events of our history. I encourage more people to read this article, it really gives food for thought on what challenges people in the country are facing today, and how little progress the county has made over the years.

This commentary is smooth and subtle in its presentation (she lets primary sources tell the story) of the conflicts of political views and strategies behind the historical move toward equality for women in the workplace. McCain's position is revealed to be a traditional put off, "I'm for it except I'm against it when it hurts employers' bottom line", and "Why don't they go away to college for an education so they can be discriminated against as a manager?"

The article makes some good points, but in a somewhat circular style. The McCain attempt to blame the victims by implying they do not have enough education so they do not get equal pay with men who also have that same education is so illogical to start with, it almost speaks for itself. The catchall palliative of more education is used when jobs are outsourced to cheap international labor, and used here to try to avoid treating the root cause which is gender discrimination.

I've never heard of this website, and at first I couldn't even tell where the "article" was on the page - but I thought this person did a good job of providing context. I had heard about the Ledbetter case and the travesty of the Supreme Court's decision through feminist news channels, but this also gave me new information. I had no idea McCain hadn't returned to vote on the Ledbetter bill!
