Is Jeremiah Wright a colossal disaster for Barack Obama or a press trick?

I don't know if Reynolds' eagerness to help Wright stage a disastrous news conference with the national media was a way of trying to help Clinton - my queries to Reynolds by phone and e-mail weren't returned yesterday - but it's safe to say she didn't see any conflict between promoting Wright and supporting Clinton...Wright should have known - and his friend and ally Reynolds, a media professional, surely knew - that bickering with the press can only harm ... This opinion column is interesting because it cites quotes from Reynolds website blog which have been picked up and commented on by blogs on both sides of the political spectrum, as well as at websites for newspapers, etc. For whatever reason (and not noted in the story), the website is now blank. And when you go to the actual blog link in other stories (http://reynoldsworldnews.blogspot.com/2008/02/hope.html) you will find a notice "The blog you were looking for was not found." A ... More »

Good information gathering by Errol Louis. This should not be an important story because it amplifies attention on mud-slinging guilt by association attacks on Obama, instead of focusing on issues. However, the appearance that the National Press Club event was arranged by a major Clinton supporter may help turn this trivializing attack back onto Hillary. I love Wright, and support 95% of the secular part of his religious message, but political operatives must know that in a ... More »

Wow! I never cease to be amazed at all the backroom ways people can manipulate the press. Every time I think I've heard it all, somebody brings a new one to light. I haven't heard any of this elsewhere, so it's quite a scoop. And kind of sad--partly because it's so well researched and believable.

Although there are elements of opinion in this piece I consider it a good example of writing that helps us understand some of the background behind Reverend Wright's speech.

Interesting information that I had not been aware of in what has been an odd "issue", at least on the hate talk radio shows concerning Obama's minister. The exerpts I have heard of Rev. Wright's words have for the most part seemed pretty obvious observations of the United States and the behavior of people. I am saddened that Obama is playing along with the hate talk racists and rejecting everything Wright said. The fact that it is even an issue shows how much racism there is in this country.

I had heard tidbits about the Reynolds relationship to Clinton. This story provided more information about Reynolds. If people are going to understand Barack Obama, they also need to understand more about black ministers and black churches. I'd like to see more black media people speak up about this issue, because I'll admit I'm woefully ignorant myself.

Is this columnist kidding? Hasn't he yet decided on the reason the National Press Club invited Reverend Wright to speak under the pretext that those oh so innocent newspeople simply wanted to hear the reverend "explain himself" ? If our writer hasn't yet got the message, I have some ocean front property in Nebraska in which he might consider investing. Still, this is the very first indication that someone in the media has so far raised even the tiniest doubt whether the National ... More »
