Racial tension simmers on Martha's Vineyard as Barack Obama arrives

When Barack Obama arrives on Martha's Vineyard for his first family holiday as president, he will enjoy the sparkling sea, salty air and fresh fish and clams.

And like others he will probably be unaware of the thousands of illegal immigrants the island relies on during its summer season.
But in the recession, a small army of dishwashers, gardeners and labourers, mostly from Brazil, has created a simmering tension with some locals and amid the ... Full Story »

Worthless. The author pulls from the comments sections of local news websites for quotes -- a worse than amateur mistake. There's also no data behind the story's claims about tension between the immigrants -- where they come from, how many there are, where they work -- and the island's citizens. A better writer could have made this story relevant, but as it stands this adds nothing to any discussion of immigration or race.

This is a textbook example of bad journalism. The article is largely based on other people's opinions, rather than verifiable factual evidence; it inappropriately uses President Obama's visit to surface racist remarks and unrelated views about illegal immigrants; and its primary source comes from the comments section of a local newspaper website. I am amazed that the Daily Telegraph allowed this irresponsible report to be published.

A poor story on several counts. There's no systematic evidence given to understand the scale of the tension described. The reporter appears to be working on the assumption that a significant number of the Brazilians are undocumented workers, with no independent corroboration presented. That the presentation is jumbled and confusing only adds to this story's overall low rating.

The article doesn't inform or enlighten because it lacks solid facts and quotations from key stakeholders. The writing is disorganized and disjointed. The reporter describes a local event in an attempt to explain racial tension on Martha's Vineyard by quoting newspaper editorials from the island and an anonymous Internet comment; this lack of original sourcing makes the article unreliable. In addition, no sourced statistics are included to draw the big picture and give the topic context.

This is an attempt at race- baiting. Why is Obama connected with this incident at all. I am sure the Brazilian laborers were there when George Bush was in office, as well. This is just wrong-headed. the caption states "racial tensions simmers" not immigration tensions. Why is that? This is complete hogwash!!
