The 2008 Election Will Be Stolen

A new collection of essays edited by Mark Crispin Miller called "Loser Take All: Election Fraud and the Subversion of Democracy, 2000 - 2008," tells the story better than any single source I've seen yet.
The Supreme Court stopped a recount in Florida in 2000 that would have made Al Gore president. This is not speculation. The recount was later done. Full Story »

I’m not sure what to make of this piece. It starts with a warning of a stolen election based on the 2004 model but ends with the threat that if Obama (this author’s presumed Democratic nominee) doesn’t come around to the point of view he supports then he and many others will stay home or vote for a third party candidate to deliberately throw the election to McCain. Been there, done that and aren’t we all better off for it?! Some people just seem determined to have it their way or drink the cool aid.

Shrill? Polemic? True? The piece is thought provoking and as I read it this Monday morning I feel so tired. With a nod to Lou Reed: "Stick a fork in it, it's cooked."

The criminal theft of the election by republicans is true, but the author does not provide the references for backup. The danger is real of many progressives withdrawing support or enthusiasm because of democratic party fecklessness on defunding the occupation forces and on failure to impeach for the clear high crimes of cheney and bush. Much of his rage should go toward the big corporate media that has promoted the war and downplayed the impeachable crimes. The blatant press pro-war pro-bush propaganda make it difficult to run and win by espousing a truth that is not evident to much of the public because of a press that has failed democracy. We can curse and push and hope for the right actions now, but we should not shoot ... More »

It is common knowledge how easy it is to rig the electronic voting machines. Why hasn't step been taken to correct this built-in flaw?

Having worked as an Election Protection Volunteer in Florida during the elections, and having seen first hand the egregious fraud, and having been threatened with jail by the police when I tried to complain, I know Mark Crispin Miller is correct in his assertions about election fraud being rampant in the last three elections -- and it is now the most serious threat to true damocracy that we face.

This opinion piece has no journalistic merit. The author repeats a series of accusations from a book, none of which stand up against the facts. The media recounts in Florida supported a Bush victory, which according to political scientists would have been 7500 votes larger except that the media called the election for Gore before the polls had closed in the Republican strongholds in the state. And the criticism of Senator Obama is truly weird (I cannot think of a more accurate alternative).

With flawed 'facts' - three recounts by the media in 2000 all showed that Bush won a close contest - how can Swanson possibly get to anything sensible. Irresponsible conspiracy mongering is dangerous because it can undermine the legitimacy of our govt in the simple minds of those who believe it.
