Dick Cheney on Fox News Sunday And the CIA

Cheney is saying he does not object to the rogue behavior of CIA agents who went beyond their legal mandate. (In the same interview, Cheney says that the Bush Justice Department found there was nothing "improper or illegal" in this behavior, a determination that is now under review by the Obama Justice Department.) Speaking of the interrogation program as a whole, Cheney says, "It was good policy. It was properly carried out. It worked very, very well." Full Story »

the article lacks cohesiveness of thought, jumping back and forth between topics. it seems as if tmr. scherer is attempting to be fair by using v.p. cheney's own words, but he weights them and analyzes them perhaps incaccurately. in example, one answer "i am" to one question in the interview is projected to an apparent extreme.

while i share the writer's perspectives generally on v.p. cheney's views on the interrogation methods, this article in my view doesn't aid in persuading his case.

The journalism exhibited in this piece strikes me as good. The reporting is succinct, the analysis of key quotes is relevant and focused. Mr. Scherer has been objective about and fair to all concerned parties.

Even President Bush said that the law must be respected. Cheney has clearly shown -- throughout his tenure -- that he sees himself and his cronies as above the law. This is how dictators behave; to have that sort of behavior from a second-in-command who then has the gall to call the subsequent scrutiny of his actions the result of political meddling is outrageous.

Basic informations for the international public concerning the current CIA debate in the U.S.

For me, the article is quite valuable and revealing, as I generally enjoy reading TIME magazine.

This is an example of bad journalism. The author injects personal bias and opinion as a substitute for fact in assuming that it is clear what Cheney was referring to by “these cases where they went beyond the specific legal authorization”. This is factually untrue. The Chris Wallace interview did not specifically mention the spun examples of interrogations that the author insinuates Cheney must have been including in his response. The News Trust guide points out that factual truth is essential to quality journalism.

A well written and very subtle defence of Cheney, giving a short account of charges and then long defenses by Cheney relying on the tried and true justification, used down through history including bu the Japanese who waterboarded Americans and were prosecuted, - National defense, security., thus leaving the reader with a definite bias for Cheney.

If we,as a nation, go along with Cheney's the end justifies the means, we go down a very slippery slope. I suppose the same people who don't seem to mind that we have been over in the Middle East blowing things up and killing people (and getting killed) for eight years now, are the ones who find torture justified.
