When Change Is Not Enough: Seven Steps to Revolution

Way back in 1962, Caltech sociologist James C. Davies published an article in the American Sociological Review that summarized the conditions that determine how and when modern political revolutions occur. Intriguingly, Davies cited another scholar, Crane Brinton, who laid out seven "tentative uniformities" that he argued were the common precursors that set the stage for the Puritan, American, French, and Russian revolutions. As I read Davies' argument, it ... Full Story »

This is an interesting read. What is the continuum from the status quo, to change, to revolution? If past precursors exist, do they necessarily lead to the same eventualities as in the past?

The theory -- and the people -- mentioned here are among the more proven-reliable when it comes to the admittedly imperfect business of projecting revolt or unrest. I have great respect for James Chowning Davies and Crane Brinton and would highly recommend When Men Revolt and Why -- a Reader in Political Violence and Revolution, edited by Davies over 35 years ago. It is an essential read for anyone who needs to understand the concept of revolt and irregular warfare. The material in ... More »

Average journalism because of the use of phrases like "followed by seven years of Bush's overt hostility toward the lower 98 percent of Americans who aren't part of his base."; one, Bush's 'base' consists of more than 2% of american's and two, the issue goes beyond a singular individual. It could have been a much better piece of journalism if had pointed out the impact of the Supreme Court decision in First National Bank of Boston versus Bellotti, in 1978 and Thom Hartmann's 'Unequal ... Robinson did a good job of telling us what Davies and Brinton wrote -- the conditions that precede revolution. Her application of these conditions to the present U.S. required a little stretching, but it's basically sound. She isn't predicting revolution, but says a big disappointment, like a stolen election, could trigger revolt.

Very consistent with my college study of revolution, as well as fascinating and pertinent to the improvement of the US system and its effects on the state of the world. Excellent journalism.

If the left had the next election in the bag they would not have to write long and spurious essays claiming that the American people are ready to revolt. The author lives in a fantasy world where conservative plutocrats rule the poor masses. Even 1917 Russia was not like that. Contrary to the author's fantasy, the American people and illegal aliens are doing quite well thank you. The only time the moderate left has won a presidential election was when they pretended to be ... More »
