For McCain, Self-Confidence on Ethics Poses Its Own Risk

Mr. McCain, 71, and the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, 40, both say they never had a romantic relationship. But to his advisers, even the appearance of a close bond with a lobbyist whose clients often had business before the Senate committee Mr. McCain led threatened the story of redemption and rectitude that defined his political identity. A thorough investigation of McCain's ethical stand on money and politics, as compared with his relations with lobbyists over the years - including his alleged ties to a female lobbyist eight years ago. Though McCain's staff denounces this article as a 'hit-and-run smear campaign', I found it to be quite informative and well-researched, fairly presenting multiple perspectives, with helpful context on an important topic which the public needs to know more about.

Wow. In terms of laying out the narrative of McCain's relationship with lobby reform and ethics, this piece does an excellent job. McCain supporters, friends, and staffers are interviewed and quoted, some anonymously. I found the specifics of the Iseman story a little weak. His staffers could have simply been being proactive for appearances.

This article points out that in several cases McCain's actions appear to be at odds with his self professed integrity. On one level it is the sort of scrutiny one invites in running for office, particularly when one claims to have been "born again" after a previous indiscretion. On a higher level, though, it is a case study of the difficulty a politician faces in representing the interests of the public at large while negotiating a system fueled by money and populated by the rich, ... seems pretty good ...McCain looks better to me after this article.....I don't like some of his politics, yet to a large degree i think he is telling the truth. Lobbying reform on anyones dime was courageous work....and considering the Bush legacy... being a republican and having any integrity/ ethics is somewhat miraculous.

The times is definitely getting a bum rap; part of why the right is so upset is because of his schmoozing with the likes of Rupert Murdoch.

The allegations are made somewhat carefully, without some details one might suspect. The Times seems to have carefully insisted on independent corroboration of things they published. One wonders what things were alleged that they had to hold back because of no corroboration. Even the fifth from the bottom graduate of the Air Force Academy should be smart enough to avoid some of the scandals he has been in that are reported in the article. The denials should be interesting.

Eight years ago, I thought Cheney and Rove put this story out to destroy him and clear the way for Cheney and Bush. When this came up for the 2nd time in Nov of 07, I thought they were behind it again. Now, here it is for the 3rd time, and I still think they are behind it. I think they like Huckabee. He agrees with them on everything. I think they're forcing McCain to come around, but they wouldn't have to force Huckabee. Third election hi-jacked- one way or another?

Wow! We know that the inept editor and even more inept publisher of the Times will be replaced by the shareholders this year, as nearly happened last year, but has the editorial staff of the National Enquirer already moved in?
