An audacious proposal to build a 5,000-mile electricity supergrid, stretching from Siberia to Morocco and Egypt to Iceland, would slash Europe's CO2 emissions by a quarter, scientists say.

This is a mere compilation of (some of) the info about the (British) case -- so it seems more truncated than necessary. What it does not state (because of the UK slant), is that other, more in-depth articles about renewable electricity research done by the German physicist Gregor Czisch note that the U.S. is in an even better position than Europe to make the AC>DC switch successfully and save energy & CO2.
