This piece looks at one of the many departures from the past that the candidacy of Barack Obama has accomplished -- his ability to break away from a dependence on the black churches. As the author phrases it, his "political success is not dependent on having the “blessing” of the black church." The report is marred, however, by a reliance on supposition and guesswork by the author ---remarks, for example, such as "It appears that the senator’s newfound success among blacks has much more to do with familiarity and perceived electability than endorsements or appeals to racial authenticity." It would have been a far better article with more reporting and good sourcing, and fewer references to "appearance" and "perception."
