Spinning the Planet: John McCain and Climate Change

This is a classic case of what our president calls the soft bigotry of low expectations. Judged against his fellow Republicans, McCain is a paragon of atmospheric wisdom. Judged against the climate and energy legislation afoot in Congress, he falls short. Judged against the two leading Democratic presidential candidates, he is a pale shadow. Judged against the imperatives of climate science -- that is to say, judged against brute physical reality -- he ... Full Story »

While Roberts has an opinion--that McCain is weaker on the environment that the common wisdom would paint him, he provides detailed support for this argument. He acknowledges McCain's courage in going against the Republican tide, citing specific examples, however he criticizes McCain for an anachronistically weak cap and trade bill and on going awol on key votes, when other Senators running for President were there and voted. In some examples, Roberts does not speak to whether all ... More »

McCain has angered ultra conservatives by going against their mantra a number of times. But now that he's their presidential candidate, his positions are shifting. (If he was Kerry, we would say, "flip flopping".) His vanishing enthusiasm about global warming puts him in company with the likes of such anti-global warming ultra conservative darlings like Tom DeLay and Jim Inhofe. Coupled with his statements about leaving troops in Iraq for a hundred years (probably to guard the oil), ... More »

There are a lot of simple and clear points made including a reasonable summary of the candidate's position over time. The summary of recent actions and interpretation is clear and open to discussion but avoids too much alignment with specific interests in the climate debate. There is quite a bit of emphasis on Cap-and-trade because that's where McCain's actions are most visible but the piece has only the Senator's actions to work from.

The article is about McCain's stand(s) on global warming. He was unwilling to go along with the Right's foot-dragging and denial, until he started his run for president and had to avoid offending the Republican base. Roberts raises the question of what he would do if elected. Probably even McCain doesn't know that, but it seems obvious his leadership on the subject would be weakened. Unfortunately, these reviews have degenerated into a debate -- strike that -- a squabble between ... More »

This is a partisan opinion piece that includes a bare minimum of factual information. The author lacks knowledge of climate science and should have read about the subject before venturing his opinions; several of the comments at the blog site point this out.
