Debunking the Reagan Myth

The Reagan economy was a one-hit wonder. Yes, there was a boom in the mid-1980s, as the economy recovered from a severe recession. But while the rich got much richer, there was little sustained economic improvement for most Americans. By the late 1980s, middle-class incomes were barely higher than they had been a decade before -- and the poverty rate had actually risen. Full Story »

Paul Krugman, one of the top progressive opinion writers in the US, seems to be tilting against Obama, as witnessed by this think piece on Ronald Reagan.

Even liberals sometimes buy into Reagan myth. Arch-liberal Krugman is the best man to puncture their fantasies.

Mostly accurate but selective. Evidence is complete but shallow. I would have expected an economist to include numbers.

Good article. Points out several facts that somehow get lost in the current political discourse - facts that should be emphasized more by the Democratic candidates. Reagan should not be given full credit for all the good things that have occurred since the early '80s.

Krugman's point is timely and he states it clearly: "why would a self-proclaimed progressive say anything that lends credibility to this rewriting of history — particularly right now, when Reaganomics has just failed all over again?"

This story effectively discredits the "Reagan-walked-on-water" fable. Reaganomics was nothing more than the old canard about trickle-down economics being good for the economy. Most Americans were shocked at tax time to find Reagan's "reductions" to be nothing more than decreases in deductions. Media spin, anyone? And making him the hero of the fall of Communism is in the realm of "once upon a time." Try as they may, ultra conservatives cannot change history's inevitable verdict of ... More »

Krugman is a wild eyed socialist obsessed with rich people. He can't stand it that Reagan was and is extremely popular. He can't stand it that Reagan policies resulted in a big economic boom and the end of inflation - contrasting with the disaster of the Nixon-Carter seventies. Of course Reagan's greatest achievement was the fall of the Soviet Union, something that took place as a consequence of his policies. Having seen Krugman on television and in person I think he is a very ... More »

The only time I say nice things about Reagan's leadership is when I am arguing with rightwingers and need them to stop shouting so I can get in a decent point. Let's hope that's what Obama was doing. But Krugman is right on when he declares the new progressive movement must relegate Reagan to his proper place in the pantheon of Presidents, He doesn't deserve mention in the same breath as FDR. Maybe McKinley. Krugman, as usual, is a much needed voice in the media world of Reagan worshippers.
