How the Pentagon planted a false story

The source of this spate of stories can now be identified as Bryan Whitman, the top Pentagon official in charge of media relations, who gave a press briefing for Pentagon correspondents that morning. Although Whitman did offer a few remarks on the record, most of the Whitman briefing was off the record, meaning that he could not be cited as the source. Full Story »

Excellent and important story. One very minor point - in graf 19 (I think) author mentions the audio as being on a "VHS channel", which should be "VHF channel", no? VHS is a videotape...

Porter follows the misinformation back to its source -- impressive. A reviewer asked about the issue of international/territorial waters. The west-bound lane in Hormuz is Iranian territorial waters -- not international waters. As per UNCLOS, which the US has not ratified yet, ships may pass through 'territorial waters' if they do not infringe the sovereignty of the bordering nations (surveillance, intelligence gathering, armed helicopter escort -- all of which the US is doing): ... This story provides an important illustration of how the news is manipulated and how false stories are planted, and then repeated by other outlets gaining credibility with each re-telling.

Excellent, objective story. And one of a growing number of emerging articles about how neocons "did it": rigging elections, destroying political opponents, centralizing media ownership, emasculating regulatory agencies, faking news, falsifying data, concealing mortgage scams--and other criminal activities far too numerous to mention here. To engage in such a clumsy, tranparent lie shows just how badly the administration wants to invade Iran. More oil, anyone?

Damn good reportorial investigatory story. It fairly conclusively shows lies to incite to war have been used again by this administration, and probably will be again until the heads are impeached. Now seems like the best time, given it was not done yesterday.

Good as far as it goes. I wonder why no one asks what the US Navy is doing, other than trying to provoke trouble, in the water near Iran. How would the people of Boston or Miami feel if a large number of fully armed war ships were cruising just on the edge of the international border. A little more background and a description of the daily condition might make the overall situation more clear. When will the lairs prosecution begin?

A very good and revealing piece that shows politics ignoring truth to make some sort of nervous point. We've seen this behavior before and we'll see it again and that is the real message in the article.

This story is a follow up on the earlier response by the same author to the AP News report about the Iranian speed boats and U S Navy war ships in the Stait of Mormuz (on Jan. 6th) and how the Pentagon distorted the circumstances of the occasion in order to promote the false notion that the Iranians were engaging in aggressive threats toward the U S Navy war ships. Repudiations of the fraudulent Pentagon account have since been issued by the U S Navy and a Pentagon consultant, no ... More »
