Hard-Liners for Jesus

It's Christmas, a holiday that couldn't be better calibrated to expose the Republicans' rank, fetid hypocrisy. How is the party of "moral values" also the party of torture and xenophobia?

But it's on their policies concerning immigrants where Republicans -- candidates and voters alike -- really run afoul of biblical writ. Not on immigration as such but on the treatment of immigrants who are already here. Consider: Christmas, after all, celebrates not just Jesus's birth but his family's flight from Herod's wrath into Egypt, a journey obviously undertaken without benefit of legal documentation. The Bible isn't big on immigrant documentation. ... Full Story »

The push to persecute the immigrants already among us comes distinctly, though by no means entirely; from the same Republican right that protests its Christian faith at every turn. It's difficult today to imagine KKKers thinking of their mission as Christian, but millions of them did. And now, inconveniently, inconsiderately, comes Christmas, a holiday that couldn't be better calibrated to expose the Republicans' rank, fetid hypocrisy.

This opinion piece makes a powerful statement about the hypocrisy that can arise when bringing religion into politics. To make a stronger case, Meyerson should have presented evidence of nominees specifically endorsing the Gospel, and then contradicting themselves in policy positions (such as immigration). Also, what about Dems? Do they do this too with other issues?

An anti-Republican rant accusing them of hypocrisy, not really useful for discussion about real issues.

very opinionated, even for an opinion piece :-P. I found the rhetoric to be to strong, but i enjoyed it none the less. if only because i thought it was fairly well written and structured. but it is such a complex issue trying to address it so simply just doesn't work.

this piece starts out with a common dishonesty, speaking of immigrants when what is meant are illegal immigrants. using a line out of Exodus and and the birth of Christ to say we shouldn't require people to obey the law is ludicrous. Articles like this is why it's so difficult for anyone to have an intelligent argument today, since those you disagree with have to be insulted and charged with all sorts of terrible attitudes that are part of the writers imagination.
