Jeff Sachs is a very smart man, which makes the lack of nuance in this piece particularly glaring. The breakdown of US aid to Pakistan is good, but he doesn't explore it convincingly.

While greater balance would have been provided by a discussion of the success of the Marshall Plan, this opinion piece is a well-reasoned, well-supported discussion that backs Sachs' assertion that support of poor and unstable societies would bring more stability than arming those who will eventually fight against each other and against us.
