A tortured stance on torture

Washington shuddered last week when The New York Times revealed that the Justice Department, under the direction of Alberto Gonzales, had undermined the will of Congress, the Supreme Court, as well as hard-won national and international standards with secret legal opinions supporting torture. This opinion piece points out hypocrisies and problems in US policy. It makes some powerful points and comparisons with the Soviet Union and dictatorial regimes.

This opinion piece,if anything, understates the outrage I feel over the torture tactics of our current administration. Black prisons? Very American. Sticking someone's head under water until they believe they are going to die? Also very American, eh? Beating someone with a phone book about the head? Why it's in our best traditions isn't it? It it WRONG. I was taught that doing the right thing can & often will cost a person. If some intelligence is missed the so what. That is the cost ... More »

This opinion piece is a little "over the top" in places but effectively argues from the position that torture is a moral issue, not a political issue, and that our use and sub rosa justification of it places us in the company of some pretty unsavory folks.

good head line.....strange to try to find balance in this issue in the face of the facts and jurisprudence....torture is criminal and ineffective,,the Geneva convention is our law not opened to willed misinterpretation ...those who torture are criminals and terrorist, those writers of criminal advocacy need prosecution. What is the reason for the secrecy (diagnosis).... not asked answered my opinion ....mental illness untreated.

It's an editorial. The facts are selective to make a point. An alternate view would present a different set of facts, not necessarily conflicting, to lead to an opposing conclusion. As an editorial it is effective

This opinion piece is very poor journalism. The author knows little of history and next to nothing about Islam. The respect for the U.S. in Muslim countries has grown substantially since the liberation of Iraq. The use of forced interrogations by the U.S. is not greater than in past wars, and on the whole prisoners are treated much better than in the past. There always are exceptions to the good treatment but the proportion of exceptions to the generally good treatment in the current ... More »
