A weak, badly written book review that tries to accomplish too much in a short space. Maiello's attempt at a criticism and historical perspective ends up reading like yet another rant against US foreign policy post WWII. There are a handful of examples of successful socialist/community democratic governments in the world that he could have drawn.

a book review which summarizes the book author's points about criteria for democracy and opinion that the middle east may not get there, and also the reviewer's opinions of what should have been included (pointing out america's sins). I would have liked to have read more of the middle east discussion. there are not enough quotes from the author, especially about the middle east, and prospects regarding democracy for russia and china.
