Philadelphia Shows the Way to Slow Foreclosures

One effort began in June in Philadelphia, where the Court of Common Pleas now requires that mortgages of all owner-occupied properties scheduled for sale by the sheriff's office be reviewed by borrowers, lenders and the courts before they can be sold.

Economy Stretches Gender Gap in Obama's Favor

Polls from mid-October show women, already more inclined to vote Democratic, embracing Obama with growing vigor, a trend that political analysts attribute to an economic crisis that is leaving women feeling acutely vulnerable to threats to their jobs, health care and financial stability. A Gallup poll from Sept. 7, the day the federal government took over mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, found female registered voters favoring Obama by 49 percent compared to 42 percent for his rival, Republican Sen. John McCain.

The elimination in 1996 of federal welfare entitlements had its roots here in Wisconsin, where voters in the 1980s were angered over perceptions that poor Chicago "welfare queens" were heading north to take advantage of more generous programs. But Craig headed north because she had family there to help her. After a short stay with her sister, Craig took her children--aged 1 to 8--to a homeless shelter. On May 15 the California Supreme Court ruled that lesbians and gays have the same constitutional rights as heterosexuals to marry whom they choose. Unless opponents can stall the ruling's implementation, it takes effect 30 days later and California will join Massachusetts in permitting same-sex marriage.

Proceeds will benefit women working in the Katrina area, which founder Eve Ensler says is being forgotten. V-Day, the global organization that fights violence against women and girls, has raised $50 million since 1998 for more than 5,000 local anti-violence groups and safe houses in South Dakota, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Kenya, Egypt and Iraq. For its 10th anniversary this year, V-Day is bringing its fundraising focus to the New Orleans Arena and Louisiana Superdome, where 24,000 evacuees--the sick, disabled and poor among them--were penned in after Hurricane Katrina for five days in 2005, an event that horrified a nation watching the crisis unfold on TV.
