Washington Times - Jul. 22 (Editorial) - Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates announced Monday that the Army plans to add an additional 22,000 troops to its ranks, growing to 569,000 soldiers. The force will be the largest it has been since the 572,000 in 1993, during the post-Cold War reduction in force, but far below the 1.57 million soldiers under arms in 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War.

Salary cap misses one Obama appointee

Washington Times - By Jim McElhatton - Feb. 08 (News Report) - Weeks before the Treasury Department announced a half-million dollar salary cap for executives at companies taking federal aid, one of President Obama's top political appointees reported a seven-figure compensation deal with one of the nation's biggest recipients of bailout cash. Deputy Secretary of State Jacob Lew filed financial-disclosure papers last month showing he took home just under $1.1 million last year as a managing director at Citi Alternative Investments, a unit of Citigroup. So far, Citigroup has gotten $45 billion in federal bailout funds. Last week, Treasury announced rules to keep senior executives at some firms that get bailout money from earning more than $500,000. The cap won't apply to Mr. Lew, however. It isn't retroactive, and not all executives at companies taking bailout money are affected by the new rules, compensation specialists say.

Complicating matters is our own misdiagnosis. It is time for us to recognize that the electorate has changed. We cannot continue to think that the United States is a center-right nation. The 2008 election demonstrated that this is no longer true, at least in an electoral sense. Republicans held some form of power from 1995 to 2009. We can confidently say that the legacy of this era will be great policy achievements: lower taxes, a reformed welfare system, a more secure world and a more accountable educational system.

Biden Jr.

Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, the provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia remained within the sovereign territory of Georgia but were autonomous. In March 2008, when South Ossetia declared independence, only Russia offered recognition. By supporting independence movements in Georgia, Russia has attempted to ensure that its Georgian neighbor would have a rocky transition to democracy and Western integration. Moscow has stepped up its attempt to undermine Georgia since the latter has sought to become a NATO member.

Washington Times - Jul. 20 (Editorial) - Not since the elections of 1950 and 1952 have consecutive "wave" years swept the House of Representatives. Surveying this year's House prospects, one cannot rule out a half-century repeat. Where are the Republicans? In the 29 states where voter registration is tracked by party, Democratic rolls have grown by almost 700,000 since the 2004 elections, while Republicans have shed nearly 1 million over the same period, as Rhodes Cook points out in the University of Virginia's election-tracking "Crystal Ball." Much of this owes to a lively Democratic primary. One should not read too much into registration, which does not necessarily predict November success.
