To continue to command public respect, the Senate will have to ask her some hard questions.
Washington Times - By Jeffery T. Kuhner - Mar. 15 (Opinion) - Beltway conservatives are turning against Rush Limbaugh. The most recent assassin is David Frum. The former Bush speechwriter and fellow at the American Enterprise Institute wrote an article, "Why Rush is wrong," in the March 16 edition of Newsweek, attacking the popular talk radio host.

Mr. Frum argues that Mr. Limbaugh should not be the "public face" of the conservative movement. Mr. Frum says Mr. Limbaugh is caught in a time warp, championing small government and tax cuts when economic realities have changed. Mr. Frum criticizes Mr. Limbaugh's Feb. 28 speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Mr. Frum also excoriates Mr. Limbaugh for saying he hopes President Obama fails. This supposedly puts conservatives on the defensive, making us look mean, petty and unsympathetic to the suffering of Americans during the financial crisis.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.9 average - 6 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Obama use this awesome power to strengthen America's defenses in a time of global conflict and repair America's economy in a period of financial distress? Or will his goal be to solidify the left's grip for the long-term, for example by shutting down conservative talk radio and perhaps other pockets of media resistance, by growing the percentage of Americans dependent on government programs, and by using immigration policy and gerrymandering to create a permanent Democratic majority?
NewsTrust Rating: 2.4 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Illegal immigration in the United States is on a slow decline - and enforcement and unemployment are playing significant roles. Unemployment surged up to 6.1 percent in September, according to the Department of Labor. In fact, the overall gloomy economic picture may be providing fewer enticements.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.5 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

The Government Printing Office's decision to export the work has proved lucrative, allowing the agency to book more than $100 million in recent profits by charging the State Department more money for blank passports than it actually costs to make them, according to interviews with federal officials and documents obtained by The Times.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Their answer might lie deep under Iceland's black rocks, where hot water percolates from the heat of the earth's internal movements -- and provides 72 percent of the island nation's energy.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Washington Times - By Sara A. Carter - Oct. 22 (News Report) - Government claims that a Mexican businessman infected with a highly contagious form of tuberculosis posed no serious public health risk by taking numerous domestic flights are based on faulty research and limited data, said a top Harvard physician who specializes in disaster medicine and infectious disease.

"This policy is ill-founded, poorly researched, and puts the population at risk," said Dr. Greg Ciottone, one of the world's leading authorities on disaster medicine, including terrorist attacks and the threat of biological warfare.

World Health Organization tuberculosis guidelines, adopted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only require airplane passengers to be notified of exposure to tuberculosis if the flight lasts more than eight hours.

"If the powers that be, who directly impact the health and well-being of this country, are going to stand by this theory that if you spend up to 7 hours 59 minutes next to someone with active TB you don't need to be tested, then people will become ill," said Dr. Ciottone,
NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Washington Times - By Fawzia Sheikh - Oct. 16 (News Report) - Coalition forces in Afghanistan are being trained to avoid civilian casualties even if that means sometimes refusing to respond to direct attacks, a senior officer said.

The careful approach is part of a broad counterinsurgency program, which U.S. commanders said has begun to yield information from a fearful population about the locations of Taliban forces and improvised explosive devices.
...
Government and foreign troops are concerned about developing local security forces, but people still fear the police, he added.

The U.S. intelligence officer said police officers may "shake down" locals because they have not been paid in several months.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.9 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Washington Times - By Patrice Hill - Oct. 11 (News Report) - The Federal Reserve"s recent rate cut won't help millions of people facing spikes in their monthly mortgage bills.

That's partly because their mortgage rates and terms are set by global investors in London, rather than in the United States.
...
Three-quarters of the ARMs taken out by buyers with shaky credit standings and about a quarter of the hybrid ARMs taken out by those with good credit ratings are tied to the London Interbank Offered Rate, or LIBOR, which is set by global banks in London.

In addition, global investors who had been buying riskier loans are now spurning them.

That is a dramatic change from only a few years ago, when most ARMs in the U.S. were tied to the prime rate set by American banks or rates on Treasury bills largely controlled by the Fed.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.3 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Washington Times - By Nicholas Kralev - Oct. 11 (News Report) - The South Korean government urged Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice yesterday to visit Pyongyang as a "political boosting measure" to an international deal requiring North Korea to disable its main nuclear facilities by year"s end.

Seoul's ambassador to Washington also said it was "ironic and paradoxical" that the Bush administration softened its previously harsh stance against the communist state only after it conducted a nuclear test one year ago this week.
...
The ambassador also said all candidates in the South's presidential election, scheduled for Dec. 19, understand that the alliance with the United States is the "backbone" of their security. Unlike in 2002, anti-Americanism is not an issue in this year's campaign, he said.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.6 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Washington Times - By Elizabeth Bryant - Oct. 09 (News Report) - Stitched from a revolution and secured through compromise, Belgium"s fragile fabric is unraveling and what once seemed impossible -- the country's partition -- is suddenly becoming imaginable.

The most immediate cause is a political deadlock among squabbling parties, which have yet to form a government more than three months after general elections.

But the roots of the standoff stretch back decades, nourished by growing language, cultural and economic differences between Dutch-speaking Flanders in the north and French-speaking Wallonia in the south.

"We live in an artificial state," said Philip Dewinter, head of the far-right Vlaams Belang, or Flemish Block, which seeks a referendum on dissolution leading to an independent Flanders.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 average - 5 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

The Turkish government elected in July has reaffirmed Ankara's refusal to open its airports and harbors to Greek-Cypriot traffic unless the European Union eases the economic isolation of the Turkish-Cypriot state, which is recognized only by Turkey.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.2 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Washington Times - By Sara A. Carter - Aug. 08 (News Report) - Islamic extremists embedded in the United States -- posing as Hispanic nationals -- are partnering with violent Mexican drug gangs to finance terror networks in the Middle East, according to a Drug Enforcement Administration report.

"Since drug traffickers and terrorists operate in a clandestine environment, both groups utilize similar methodologies to function ... all lend themselves to facilitation and are among the essential elements that may contribute to the successful conclusion of a catastrophic event by terrorists," said the confidential report, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Times.

The 2005 report outlines an ongoing scheme in which multiple Middle Eastern drug-trafficking and terrorist cells operating in the U.S. fund terror networks overseas, aided by established Mexican cartels with highly sophisticated trafficking routes.

These terrorist groups, or sleeper cells, include people who speak Arabic, Spanish and Hebrew and, for the most part, arouse no suspicion in their communities.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.8 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
