McCain Health Plan Has Underlying Illness

TheStreet.com - Oct. 07 (News Report) - Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) has promised to revolutionize the U.S. health care industry if elected president by ending the current employer-based tax subsidy and offering the subsidy instead to individuals. His plan would cost about $1.3 trillion over 10 years, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

McCain says his plan would be revenue neutral -- so he would have to make cuts or raise taxes to pay for it. His chief policy adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, says the plan would pay for itself by cutting costs. But in reality, the health care proposal could place baby boomers and seniors in danger of no coverage or substandard coverage.

McCain's health care plan would have several unintended consequences. Those people still receiving health care from their employers would have to pay taxes on those benefits. Individuals could avoid the tax by rejecting employer-based health care and purchasing their own coverage in the open market. The tax subsidy would work out to $5,000 for a family and $2,500 for an individual.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average - 6 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

No one can answer that with any certainty as dozens of interrelated political and economic forces can each move prices several dollars per barrel, and divining the collective effect is impossible.

Will oil hit $100 per barrel?

That, surprisingly, is an easier question because there is one indicator that may give you a pretty good idea: the U.S. response to Iraq's civil war.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

TheStreet.com - By Scott Moritz - Sep. 05 (News Analysis) - Apple's (AAPL) long-awaited cell phone is ready for production, says a Wall Street analyst.

Though there's no confirmation from Apple and no leaked photos of the official prototype, American Technology Research analyst Albert Lin released a report Tuesday saying, "The kinks have been worked out of the new phone and that it is set for production."

Lin, a wireless technology analyst who has been tracking the Apple phone developments, says the device will be a "smartphone." Typically these are converged devices with operating systems that manage features like music collections, call lists, Web access and cameras.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.2 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
