The Times is a national newspaper published daily in the United Kingdom since 1785, and under the name The Times since 1788; it is the original "Times" newspaper. For much of its history, the newspaper was regarded as Britain's newspaper of record. However, many people feel it has gone downmarket since being acquired by Rupert Murdoch - for example because it began to cover stories about celebrities such as pop stars.
