Iran not producing weapon-grade uranium: IAEA

The Hindu - By Atul Aneja - Feb. 22 (News Report) - Iran has not converted the low-grade uranium that it has produced into weapon-grade uranium, inspectors belonging to the International Atomic Energy Agency have said. The Austrian Press Agency quoted an IAEA expert as saying that the uranium substances that Iran has produced at its Natanz enrichment facility have been carefully recorded and remote cameras have been installed to supervise part of the stockpile.

Like Sudha, many involved with the campaign would agree that a large number of young girls in this country do not go to school because their fathers think it is not worth it. In a patriarchal set-up like ours, men are still the decision-makers of their families. This, unfortunately, has been a roadblock in the emancipation of many women on different fronts. And one typical example is in imparting basic education in young girls, mostly from poor families.

The Hindu - Aug. 11 (Editorial) - Georgia's adventurism in attacking and attempting brutally to take military control of the breakaway region of South Ossetia had zero chance of success, given the geopolitical circumstances. Within three days, it announced it had pulled out to avoid a "humanitarian catastrophe," although Russia has disputed this. Rarely in the modern history of conflict has there been military provocation of this kind against a great power in a context of such extreme mil itary imbalance. Georgia, a transcontinental nation that became part of the Soviet Union in 1922 and declared independence as a result of the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, is estimated by Jane's to have 26,900 military personnel against Russia's 641,000; 82 main battle tanks against 6,717; 139 armoured personnel carriers against 6,388; and seven combat aircraft against 1,206. Its military achievement has been to devastate Tskhinvali, the South Ossetian capital, kill more than 2,000 civilians (most of them Russian citizens), and create 34,000 refugees, according to Russian and South Ossetian estimates. Russia maintains a peace keeping force in South Ossetia under a 1992 agreement and the Georgian attack, which took place when the world's attention was focussed on the Beijing Olympics, killed 13 Russian soldiers and injured more than 150. Unsurprisingly, Moscow's military response has been swift and overwhelming, involving ground forces, combat aircraft, and warships on a scale that made the three-day 'war' a no-contest.

When the Bush administration came to power it wanted India to be a part of its missile defence shield. Since 9/11, the Indian and U.S. navies and Special Forces have conducted a number of joint exercises in the Indian Ocean and in the hills of India's Northeast. U.S. State Department official Christian Rocca said (in 2002), "Military-to-military cooperation is now producing tangible progress towards [the] objective [of] strategic, diplomatic and political cooperation as well as sound economic ties."

Former bandit joins Indian Justice Party

The Hindu - Nov. 19 (News Report) - Former bandit Seema Parihar, who ruled the ravines of the Chambal for 18 years before surrendering before a court in 2000, kicked off her political career on Saturday by joining the Indian Justice Party (IJP). Ms. Parihar is likely to be one of the star campaigners for the IJP during the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh next year. Announcing her induction into the party at a press conference here, IJP national president Udit Raj said Ms. Parihar had not entered the world of crime on her own. Also, such people should be given a chance to serve the people.
